How to check your webcam and mic before a call
Press Start camera and mic and allow both when your browser asks. Within a second you should see yourself and watch the meter move as you talk. Then press Record to capture a short video with sound and watch it back.
If the camera fails but the mic works, the test keeps going with sound only and tells you what went wrong with the camera. The two are separate devices with separate permissions, so one can work while the other does not.
What the camera readout tells you
The small label on the picture shows the resolution and frame rate your browser receives, for example 1280 × 720 at 30 fps. The test asks for 720p, which is what most video calls use. If you see 640 × 480, the camera is old, the browser picked a different camera, or another app limits it.
The preview is mirrored, as in most call apps, so moving your right hand moves the hand on the right. Other people see you the right way round. The recorded clip is not mirrored.
Webcam mic or headset mic?
Most webcams have a built-in mic, and it often gets picked by default. That is fine in a quiet room, but it sits an arm's length away, so it hears more of the room and less of you. A headset or a desk mic close to your mouth almost always sounds clearer. Use the microphone list to switch and compare: record one clip with each and play them back.
Camera not showing a picture?
- Close other video apps. Often only one app can use a camera at a time. Zoom, Teams, OBS or a browser tab can hold it.
- Check the shutter and the key. Many laptops have a sliding privacy cover or a keyboard key that turns the camera off.
- Allow the camera. Click the icon left of the address bar and set Camera to Allow, then reload.
- Check your system privacy settings. On Windows 11 open Settings, Privacy and security, Camera. On a Mac open System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera. Make sure your browser is allowed.
- Try another USB port for an external webcam, ideally one directly on the computer rather than a hub.
For problems with the sound, the mic fix checklist covers every step. For a sound-only check with a bigger meter, use the main microphone test.
Is it safe to test my camera here?
Yes. The picture goes straight from your camera to this page in your browser and nowhere else. The page has no code that sends it anywhere. Press Stop, or close the tab, and the camera turns off. Your browser's camera indicator shows you when it is on.
