Mic Test for Discord, Zoom and Teams
Discord, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet each have their own mic test and their own input setting. If others cannot hear you, the app is usually listening to the wrong microphone, or you are muted inside the call.
Start with our microphone test in the same browser or on the same computer. If the meter moves there, your mic and your system are fine, and the fix is in the app. Note the name of the mic that worked, then pick the same one in the app below.
How to test your mic on Discord
- Click the gear icon next to your name at the bottom left to open User Settings.
- Open Voice and Video.
- Under Input Device, pick your microphone. Set Input Volume high enough.
- Under Mic Test, press Let's Check and talk. The bar lights up and you hear yourself through your output device.
Two Discord settings cause most "nobody can hear me" problems:
- Input sensitivity. With Voice Activity, Discord only sends sound above a threshold. If the threshold is too high, quiet speech never gets through. Turn on automatic sensitivity, or drag the slider left.
- Push to Talk. If the input mode is Push to Talk, nobody hears you unless you hold the key. Switch to Voice Activity if you did not mean to set it.
How to test your mic on Zoom
- In the Zoom desktop app, click your profile picture and open Settings.
- Open Audio.
- Choose your device under Microphone and press Test Mic. Zoom records a few seconds and plays them back.
When you join a meeting, Zoom also offers Test speaker and microphone. Inside a meeting, click the small arrow next to the Mute button to switch microphones without leaving. Zoom also runs a test meeting at zoom.us/test.
If you sound too quiet or uneven, look at Automatically adjust microphone volume in the audio settings. With it on, Zoom changes your level by itself. Turn it off if you have set the level carefully already.
How to test your mic on Microsoft Teams
- Click the three dots next to your profile picture and open Settings.
- Open Devices.
- Choose your microphone under Audio settings.
- Press Make a test call. A bot asks you to record a short message, plays it back and lists whether your mic, speaker and camera work.
In a meeting, open More, then Settings, then Device settings to switch the mic on the fly. Teams also has noise suppression settings in the same place.
How to test your mic on Google Meet
Google Meet runs in the browser, so the browser permission matters most.
- Open the meeting link. On the screen before you join, check the mic icon is not crossed out.
- Click Check your audio and video to record and play back a short clip, if your account shows it.
- Open the three dots menu, then Settings, then Audio, and pick your microphone.
If Meet says it cannot use the mic, allow it in the address bar. Because Meet and this site both use the browser, a mic that works in our test will work in Meet once it is selected and allowed.
Where each app keeps its mic settings
| App | Mic setting | Built-in test |
|---|---|---|
| Discord | User Settings, Voice and Video, Input Device | Let's Check |
| Zoom | Settings, Audio, Microphone | Test Mic |
| Teams | Settings, Devices, Audio settings | Make a test call |
| Google Meet | Settings, Audio, Microphone | Check your audio and video |
Mic works in our test but not in the app
- Desktop app permissions. On Windows 11, Settings, Privacy and security, Microphone, Let desktop apps access your microphone must be on. On a Mac, the app must be switched on in Privacy and Security, Microphone.
- Another app holds the mic. Quit other call apps completely, including from the system tray or menu bar.
- Muted in the call. Check the mute button in the app and, on some headsets, the mute switch on the cable.
- Restart the app after you change a system setting. Most apps read the device list only at start.
For problems that show up everywhere, not just in one app, go through the mic not working checklist. If your camera is part of the call, run the webcam and mic test as well.
